eSmart launches new resources for… | Alannah & Madeline Foundation Skip to main content

The Alannah & Madeline Foundation is proud to launch the eSmart Digital Licence for students aged 4-9 years. The new resources are part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to equipping children and young people with the essential skills to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly, and complement the resources already available for students in grades 5 to 10.

Children encounter digital technology from an early age, with one-third of children aged 6 to 13 already owning a smartphone.

Recognising the important role technology plays in children's lives, eSmart embraces a tech-positive approach, affirming the many benefits of technology while also addressing the risks learners may encounter online.

The new eSmart Digital Licence has been designed to provide young learners, aged 4-9 years of age, with critical online safety skills. The program supports educators to deliver lessons that are evidence-based, age-appropriate, and aligned with the national curriculum, helping students build the skills and confidence to thrive online.

Crucially, the eSmart Digital Licence program was co-designed with over 1,000 school students and teachers across Australia. This ensures the lessons are relevant, engaging and suitable for classroom use, with or without the use of technology.

The program is built around the 4Cs of online safety:

Content

Helping learners navigate and critically evaluate harmful or inappropriate online material.

Contact

Teaching students how to set online boundaries and safely communicate using privacy settings and responsible internet practices.

Conduct

Guiding positive online behaviours and promoting responsible digital citizenship.

Compulsion

Encouraging healthy tech habits and managing screen time to prevent excessive device use.

In 2022, the Australian Federal Government committed $6 million in funding to the Alannah & Madeline Foundation. This allowed us to make eSmart free to access and use for all Australian primary and secondary schools, giving every student the opportunity to benefit from this essential learning.

As Australia’s trusted provider of online safety, eSmart empowers schools, educators and families by providing access to free, regularly updated resources that are aligned with the national curriculum. These resources give school communities the tools they need to help students become safe, smart, and responsible digital citizens.
