Bundle 3: Online safety
Teaching online safety ensures that young people are aware of the potential risks that can exist in the online world, and arms them with the skills and knowledge to either prevent the risks from occurring, or to respond appropriately if they do.
Introduce the idea of a digital footprint - jut like when you walk through dirt you leave behind a rail, when you spend time online, you leave a record of everything you do.
Ask students to imagine the sort of digital footprint they want to leave behind - what would you want someone to see in ten years if they typed your name into a search engine?
Begin a discussion of similarities and differences about being 'online' and 'offline' and what that means. Introduce the idea that people can be online and offline at the same time too.
Introduce to students methods of developing passwords. Discuss with students why passwords are important and how they protect our profiles and identity.
Discuss with students what is phishing and why it is a risk. Ask students if they have any examples or instance where they have witnessed this.
Discuss with students that using the internet can be really fun, however using the internet safely does mean remembering a few rules.
Start a discussion to see what students understand about privacy. What is privacy? How do we keep things private in the physical and digital world?
Start a class discussion about photos - who takes digital photos and how do we share those photos with others?
Because the ways we use digital platforms and technology are ever-changing, so too are the things that need to be taught to help someone become digitally literate.
